Why we switched to WordPress and quit flarum

Reflections on Choosing Flarum

In 2021, when we initially launched our website, we opted for Flarum Core as our platform of choice. Flarum, known for its simplicity and effectiveness in creating engaging communities, seemed like a perfect fit. Initially, the platform lived up to our expectations, performing well in online searches, particularly in Google and Bing, which drove most of our organic traffic.

SEO Challenges with Flarum

However, towards the end of 2022, we began noticing significant issues with how Bing indexed our site. Despite our discussions being easily searchable on Google, Bing searches yielded no results for specific discussions, only showing our homepage. This issue was puzzling and frustrating, as Bing is a major search engine and being visible there is crucial for maintaining a broad online presence.

Transition to WordPress

After numerous attempts and extensive research to resolve these indexing issues, we realized the problem might lie deeper within Flarum’s framework or its compatibility with Bing’s crawling algorithms. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a critical component of digital marketing and not being indexed properly can severely impact visibility and traffic. This realization was disappointing, as it meant that despite Flarum's robust community features, it fell short in a crucial aspect of web presence management.

Decision to Migrate

Given the significance of SEO for our site's success, we had to make a tough decision. Continuing with Flarum meant risking further SEO difficulties, potentially affecting our ranking and visibility not just on Bing, but possibly other search engines like Yandex, Yahoo, and Swisscows, where cross-engine visibility can be interconnected. This risk was too great; thus, we decided to migrate our platform from Flarum to WordPress.

Challenges in Migration

WordPress, with its vast array of SEO tools and plugins, offered a more reliable and tested foundation for search engine visibility. The migration process was not without its challenges, particularly in transferring existing content. The architecture of Flarum is quite different from WordPress, which meant that we had to invest significant time and resources to ensure a smooth transition. Each discussion needed to be carefully migrated to ensure no loss of data or SEO rankings, a process that was both time-consuming and resource-intensive.

Benefits of WordPress

This shift, while initially a strain on our resources, proved beneficial in the long run. WordPress’s robust SEO capabilities, combined with its flexibility and scalability, allowed us to not only recover our lost visibility in Bing but also to enhance our overall site performance. The wide range of SEO plugins available for WordPress, such as Yoast SEO, provided us with nuanced control over every aspect of our SEO strategy, from keyword optimization to readability checks.

Security Considerations

Security was another critical factor in our decision to move away from Flarum. Any platform vulnerabilities can be exploited, and we encountered instances where security patches and updates were not as prompt as we would have liked with Flarum. WordPress, with its large community and constant updates, offered a more secure environment. Staying on top of security updates is vital for maintaining user trust and protecting data, and WordPress’s track record made us feel more confident in our platform’s security.

Enhanced User Engagement

Furthermore, community management and user engagement, while initially thriving on Flarum, saw improvements after the switch. WordPress’s extensive range of plugins for user management and engagement allowed us to tailor the experience to our audience’s needs more effectively, enhancing user interaction and satisfaction.

Lessons Learned

Looking back at our journey from Flarum to WordPress, it was a lesson in the importance of scalability, security, and especially SEO in choosing a web platform. For anyone considering their options, it's crucial to not only evaluate how a platform meets current needs but also how it stands to support the growth and evolving demands of an online presence. While Flarum offered an excellent starting point with a focus on community building, WordPress provided the necessary tools and reliability required for scaling our website effectively.
