How to Perform Istikharah

Posted on

Performing Istikharah is a deeply personal and spiritual practice in Islam, often undertaken when faced with a decision or dilemma. The term Istikharah translates to seeking goodness or guidance from Allah. It involves praying a specific dua (supplication) and seeking divine assistance in making the right choice. Istikharah is not about expecting a miraculous sign or dream but rather about seeking Allah's guidance and being content with the outcome, whatever it may be.

Understanding the Purpose of Istikharah

The purpose of Istikharah is to seek Allah's guidance when making a decision, especially when one is uncertain about the best course of action. It acknowledges human limitations and the need for divine assistance in navigating life's challenges. Istikharah is not a replacement for careful consideration, consultation, or personal effort in decision-making but rather a complementary spiritual practice that seeks Allah's blessing and wisdom.

Preparation for Istikharah

  1. Perform Ritual Purity: Before performing Istikharah, ensure you are in a state of ritual purity by performing Wudu (ablution) or Ghusl (full-body purification) if necessary.
  2. Choose the Decision: Clearly define the decision you are seeking guidance on. It could be related to marriage, career, education, travel, or any other significant life choice.
  3. Seek Knowledge: Gather relevant information and consult with knowledgeable individuals to understand the implications of your decision. Seeking advice from trusted friends, family members, or mentors can provide valuable perspectives.
  4. Internal Reflection: Take time for internal reflection and self-assessment. Consider your values, goals, strengths, and weaknesses in relation to the decision at hand. This introspection can help clarify your priorities and preferences.

Performing the Istikharah Prayer

  1. Offer Two Rakahs: Begin by offering two voluntary rak'ahs (units of prayer). These can be performed at any time of the day or night, except during the prohibited times for prayer (i.e., sunrise, sunset, and when the sun is at its zenith).
  2. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha and a Surah: In each rak'ah, recite Surah Al-Fatiha (the Opening Chapter of the Quran) followed by another Surah of your choice.
  3. Recite the Istikharah Dua: After completing the Surahs, recite the Istikharah dua (supplication) with sincerity and conviction. The dua is as follows: "Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi ilmika wa astaqdiruka bi qudratika wa as’aluka min fadlika, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdiru wa ta’lamu wa la a’lamu wa anta ‘allam al-ghuyub. Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha’l-amra (mention your decision) khayrun li fi dini wa ma‘ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li thumma barik li fihi. Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hadha’l-amra sharrun li fi dini wa ma‘ashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu waqdur li al-khayr haithu kana thumma ardini bihi." Translation: "O Allah, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allah, if in Your knowledge, this matter (mention your decision) is good for my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, immediate and in the future, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge, this matter is bad for my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs, immediate and in the future, then turn it away from me, and turn me away from it, and grant me strength to bear it, and make me pleased with what You have decreed for me, for me."
  4. Supplicate for Guidance: After reciting the dua, you may also supplicate in your own words, expressing your concerns, hopes, and trust in Allah's wisdom and mercy.

Seeking Signs or Guidance

  1. Be Attentive to Signs: After performing Istikharah, be attentive to any signs or feelings that may indicate Allah's guidance. These signs can manifest in various ways, such as feelings of peace or discomfort, clarity of thought, or unexpected opportunities or obstacles.
  2. Trust in Allah's Decree: Remember that Istikharah is a form of surrendering to Allah's will and trusting in His wisdom. Even if the outcome is not what you initially desired, trust that Allah knows what is best for you and has a plan for your well-being.
  3. Be Patient and Content: Avoid rushing into a decision immediately after performing Istikharah. Give yourself time to reflect on the dua and any feelings or signs you may have experienced. Ultimately, be content with the outcome, knowing that Allah's guidance is always for the best.

Performing Istikharah is a way for Muslims to seek Allah's guidance and blessings when faced with important decisions in life. By following the prescribed steps with sincerity, seeking knowledge and consultation, and trusting in Allah's wisdom, individuals can make informed choices while aligning their intentions with their faith.
