An overheating phone paired with a flood of pop-up ads is one of the clearest combinations pointing to adware. When malicious apps run constantly in the background to serve ads or harvest data, the processor works overtime, and that extra load generates heat even when you’re not actively using the device. Here’s how to confirm the cause and clear it out.
Confirming Adware Is the Culprit
Before diving into removal, it helps to recognize the specific pattern adware creates, since overheating alone can have several other causes.
- Overheating with no clear cause — heat building up while the phone is idle or barely in use, rather than during gaming or video streaming
- Full-screen pop-up ads — appearing even when no app is actively open
- Fast battery drain — paired with the overheating, since background processes consume power continuously

- Select “Safe Mode” when the confirmation dialog appears
- The phone will restart with “Safe Mode” displayed in the bottom corner
On some Samsung Galaxy models, this process differs slightly — if the long-press method doesn’t trigger the Safe Mode prompt, restart the phone and hold Volume Down as the Samsung logo appears instead.
If the pop-ups and overheating disappear once you’re in Safe Mode, that’s a strong confirmation the problem is a third-party app rather than a deeper system issue, and it’s removable without a full factory reset.
Step 2: Identify and Remove the Suspicious App
While still in Safe Mode, since the adware can’t run or defend itself in this state, go through the installed apps list.

- Tap the app and select Uninstall

Google Play Protect scans apps automatically in the background, but it’s built primarily to catch threats from apps distributed through the Play Store — sideloaded APKs, browser-injected adware, and more deeply embedded threats can slip past it. Running a second, specialized scanner closes that gap.
- Briefly disable Airplane Mode to get internet access
- Download a reputable mobile security app, such as MalwareFox, Bitdefender, or AVAST, from the Google Play Store
- Open the app and update its threat definitions before scanning
- Run a full scan of the device
- Review the results — the scanner will typically categorize each detected threat as adware, trojan, or spyware
- Remove everything flagged

Step 4: Clear Browser Cache and Cookies
A lot of adware and malicious redirects arrive through the browser via shady websites rather than a standalone app. Clearing cached data can stop those sites from continuing to function on your device.
- Open Chrome (or your default browser) and tap the three-dot menu
- Select “Delete browsing data,” then “More options”
- Set the time range to “All time”
- Untick “Browsing history” if you want to keep it, but leave “Cookies and site data” and “Cached images and files” checked
- Tap “Delete data”
Note this will log you out of most websites, so you’ll need to sign back in afterward.
Step 5: Update Your Phone’s Security Patch

Checking Settings > System > Software Update and installing any pending security patch helps prevent reinfection going forward.
Step 6: Restart Normally and Monitor
Once the suspicious apps are removed and the scan comes back clean, restart the phone out of Safe Mode. Keep an eye on temperature and battery behavior over the next day or two — if overheating and pop-ups don’t return, the adware has been successfully cleared.
