The Overall Picture
Research consistently shows that people with epilepsy face a higher risk of premature death than the general population, typically estimated at two to three times greater. The risk rises sharply for people with frequent generalized tonic-clonic seizures and poor adherence to anti-seizure medication.
Injuries and Accidents
Seizures themselves can create dangerous situations, particularly when they happen during everyday activities. Falls, drowning, burns, and accidents during activities like swimming, driving, or climbing stairs are all risks that become more likely when seizures aren’t well controlled. These injury-related deaths are a meaningful part of why overall mortality is elevated in this population.
Timing After Diagnosis
Long-term population studies show that the risk of death is highest in the first few years after an epilepsy diagnosis, then gradually decreases over time. This pattern suggests that early, aggressive management of new-onset epilepsy may play an important role in reducing longer-term risk.
Mental Health and Other Contributing Factors
Epilepsy often coexists with anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges, and research has found a higher risk of suicide among people with epilepsy compared to the general population. Beyond mental health, people with epilepsy are also more likely to experience other chronic conditions, such as stroke, migraine, and cardiovascular issues, which can compound overall health risk.
