1. Brazilian Wandering Spider (Phoneutria)
Recognized by Guinness World Records as the most venomous spider based on toxicity, Phoneutria fera and Phoneutria nigriventer are found throughout South America, especially Brazil’s Amazon and Atlantic rainforests. Their neurotoxic venom causes irregular heartbeat, excessive salivation, and severe pain. Despite the fearsome reputation, a powerful antivenom means fatalities are rare today — out of more than 7,000 recorded bites, only about 10 have resulted in death.
2. Sydney Funnel-Web Spider
Native to Australia, the Sydney funnel-web (Atrax robustus) holds the Guinness World Record for the world’s most venomous spider by toxicity, with a lethal dose to humans of just 0.2 mg/kg. Its venom contains a potent neurotoxin called atracotoxin. No deaths have been recorded since an effective antivenom was introduced in 1981.
3. Black Widow Spider
Found on every continent except Antarctica, the black widow (Latrodectus genus) is identifiable by the red hourglass marking on its abdomen. Its venom is reported to be around 15 times stronger than a rattlesnake’s by weight, though the small amount injected and available antivenom keep fatalities rare, with symptoms typically limited to severe muscle pain, nausea, and breathing difficulty.
4. Redback Spider
Australia’s close relative of the black widow, the redback causes more reported bite incidents than any other Australian spider. Its venom is marginally more potent than the black widow’s, though serious reactions requiring antivenom are uncommon and fatalities are exceedingly rare.
5. Brown Recluse Spider
Found across the South, Central, and Midwestern United States, the brown recluse (Loxosceles reclusa) is identified by a violin-shaped marking on its back. Its cytotoxic venom can cause necrotic skin lesions in severe cases, though these are less common than the spider’s fearsome reputation suggests, and bites are often over-reported.
6. Chilean Recluse Spider
Widely considered the most dangerous recluse species, the Chilean recluse (Loxosceles laeta) is found throughout South America and carries venom with strong necrotic and hemolytic properties. Its bite has a notably higher rate of systemic complications — including kidney failure and blood disorders — than other recluse species, occurring in an estimated 10-15% of untreated cases.
7. Six-Eyed Sand Spider
Native to the deserts of southern Africa, the six-eyed sand spider (Hexophthalma hahni) produces a hemolytic and necrotic venom that laboratory studies suggest is extremely potent, with no antivenom currently available. Direct risk to humans is very low, though, since the spider is reclusive and confirmed human bites are almost nonexistent — only two suspected cases have ever been documented.
8. Mouse Spider
Australia’s mouse spiders carry venom comparable in potency to the Sydney funnel-web’s. Fortunately, they’re known for frequently delivering “dry” bites with no venom injected, and their relatively low aggression keeps them lower-risk in practice than their venom potency alone would suggest.
9. Brown Widow Spider
A relative of the black widow found in warmer regions worldwide, the brown widow’s venom is chemically similar to its more famous cousin’s but is generally considered less potent, resulting in milder symptoms in most documented bites.
10. False Widow Spider
Common across Europe, the false widow (Steatoda species) is often mistaken for a true black widow due to its similar shape, though it lacks the red hourglass marking. Its venom is considerably less toxic than a black widow’s, but bites can still cause significant localized pain and swelling.
11. Katipo Spider
A rare and endangered relative of the black widow found only in New Zealand, the katipo carries a similarly neurotoxic venom. Genuine encounters are increasingly uncommon due to the spider’s shrinking native habitat, but it remains one of the few spiders in New Zealand considered medically significant.
12. Chinese Bird Spider

15. Hobo Spider
Once widely believed to cause necrotic bites similar to the brown recluse, more recent research — including reviews by the CDC — has found no solid scientific evidence supporting this claim. It remains on many “dangerous spider” lists due to its aggressive reputation and presence in North America and Europe, but its actual medical risk to humans is now considered far lower than once thought.
Spiders Wrongly Feared as Dangerous
Several spiders that regularly appear on “deadliest” lists online have been shown through more rigorous research to pose little real threat:
- Wolf spiders — Despite their large size and fast movement, researchers have found their venom causes at most mild, localized irritation, with no evidence of neurotoxic or tissue-destroying effects.
- Huntsman spiders — Their venom is not considered medically significant to humans, and they typically flee rather than bite.
- Camel spiders — Not true spiders at all, and lacking venom glands entirely, though their bite can still be physically painful.
- White-tailed spiders — Long blamed for causing skin necrosis in Australia, subsequent research found no scientific evidence supporting this connection.
