Because the brain is intimately involved in learning, ADHD does affect learning in various ways, even though it isn’t itself a disorder of reading, writing, or math comprehension. Research reviewing children with co-occurring autism spectrum disorder and ADHD found that adverse childhood experiences add an additional layer of complexity to school engagement and resilience, underscoring the value of early identification so interventions can begin before academic struggles compound with other stressors in a child’s life.
