What You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these essentials:
- A set of jumper cables (or a portable jump starter pack)
- A working vehicle with a charged battery, positioned close enough for the cables to reach

Before You Connect Anything
Start with a quick inspection to catch problems before they become dangerous. Check the dead battery for cracks, bulging, or leaking — if you spot any of these, don’t attempt a jump start; call for professional help instead. Confirm both vehicles use a 12-volt battery, which covers virtually all modern cars. Park the working vehicle close enough for the cables to reach both batteries, though the two vehicles don’t need to touch. Turn off both engines, engage the parking brakes, and pop both hoods.
Connecting the Cables in the Right Order

Starting the Car
