Groundnuts (peanuts) are a rewarding but somewhat particular crop — they fix their own nitrogen in the soil, need very specific conditions to actually form pods, and are vulnerable to a handful of common mistakes that quietly cut yields. Getting the fundamentals right from planting through harvest makes a real difference in the size and quality of what you pull out of the ground. Here’s how to set yourself up for a strong crop.
Choose the Right Soil and Prepare It Properly
Groundnuts do best in sandy loam soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Heavy clay or dense black soils aren’t well suited to the crop, since groundnuts need loose, well-draining soil for their underground pods to develop properly. Before planting, plow the field to a depth of around 15 to 20 centimeters (6 to 8 inches) to break up compaction and improve aeration, then level the surface to prevent water from pooling. Working in 4-5 tons of fully decomposed organic manure per acre during the final plowing gives the crop a strong nutritional base to start from.

Time Your Planting to Soil Temperature, Not the Calendar

Weed control matters most in the first three to six weeks after sowing, when groundnut seedlings can’t yet compete effectively against weeds for nutrients, water, and light. After around 45 days, avoid disturbing the soil around the plants at all — this is when the plant sends its pegs down into the soil to begin forming pods, and unnecessary cultivation at this stage can damage that process and reduce yield.
Watch for Common Pests and Diseases
Groundnuts are susceptible to aphids, thrips, leaf miners, leaf spot, rust, and stem rot. Crop rotation, choosing resistant varieties where available, and applying treatments like local soap solutions to suppress aphids and leaf spot can help keep these issues manageable without heavy reliance on chemical intervention. Regular scouting of your field for early signs of pest or disease pressure lets you respond before problems spread significantly.
Time Your Harvest Carefully
Harvesting at the right moment matters enormously for both yield and quality. Signs of maturity include yellowing of the lower leaves, pods developing a rougher, harder surface with prominent veins, and a darkening on the inner surface of the pod shell. Harvesting too early sacrifices yield, but harvesting too late risks mold development, which can lead to aflatoxin contamination — a serious quality and safety concern, so promptness once the crop is genuinely mature matters more than trying to squeeze out a few extra days of growth.
Cure and Dry Properly After Harvest
Once harvested, let the pods cure in small heaps for two to three days before separating the nuts from any remaining soil. Proper drying afterward — generally several hours to a full day depending on conditions — helps prevent mold growth during storage. Store the finished, dried groundnuts in a cool, dry area to preserve quality and protect against post-harvest losses.
