The Design Studio Sequence
Studio work sits at the core of nearly every architecture program, building in complexity year over year.
- First year — introductory studio work focuses on techniques in drawing, model building, and digital production, introducing concepts like form, space, proportion, and scale through architectural design in the first semester and urban design in the second.
- Second year and beyond — studio focus shifts toward technologies within architecture, addressing fundamental principles like structure, enclosure, circulation, program, site, and light, giving students a way to speculate on different architectural types.

- Study away requirements — some programs require all third-year students to study away from the main campus for a semester, with options to pursue an internship or study abroad program for global architecture and design perspective.

Path to Licensure
A BS-Arch alone typically isn’t enough to become a licensed architect — it’s designed as a launching point. In the U.S., most state registration boards require a degree from an accredited professional program as a prerequisite for licensure, and NAAB, the sole agency authorized to accredit U.S. professional architecture degrees, recognizes the Bachelor of Architecture, Master of Architecture, and Doctor of Architecture as the accredited paths. A pre-professional bachelor’s degree can be combined with a professional graduate degree, which together constitute an accredited professional education.
Some schools also offer accelerated paths toward licensure. Motivated second-year students who want to become licensed architects can pursue an Integrated Path to Architecture Licensure (iPAL) program, allowing them to simultaneously work on education, professional experience, and licensing exams to reduce the overall time needed to become licensed.
Career Flexibility Beyond Architecture
Because the degree combines design training with a broader liberal arts foundation, it doesn’t lock students into one narrow path. The broad liberal arts foundation built into many BS-Arch programs can lead to career options beyond architecture itself. The design methods, technical expertise, and critical thinking skills students gain are increasingly sought after in business, industry, and other diverse design-related settings. Many students also round out their studies with a minor — a majority of students in at least one program graduate with a minor alongside their architecture degree.
