On March 23, 2019, the cruise ship Viking Sky sent out a mayday call off the coast of Norway after its engines suddenly failed in the middle of a violent storm, setting off one of the most dramatic maritime rescue operations in recent memory. With more than 1,300 people on board and the ship drifting toward a notoriously treacherous stretch of coastline, what followed was a race against time involving helicopter crews, rough seas, and a vessel that came within meters of running aground.
A Ship Sailing Into a Storm
The Viking Sky, a cruise ship built in 2017 and operated by Viking Ocean Cruises, had departed from Tromsø, Norway, before the incident. According to a later class-action lawsuit filed by passengers, weather forecasts had warned of an intense cyclone as early as March 16, predicting extremely severe wind gusts that could exceed 75 mph in the waters off western Norway on the days the ship would be sailing through them. The lawsuit alleged that passengers were not informed of the severity of the weather system they were heading into.
Engine Failure in Hustadvika
The crisis unfolded in Hustadvika, a stretch of water along Norway’s west coast known for its fierce weather and shallow, reef-dotted waters — an area the Norwegian government has since considered addressing with a major tunnel project to improve maritime safety. As bad weather hit, engine problems caused the ship to begin drifting toward the rocky shore, prompting the crew to send out a mayday signal.
Investigators later determined the root cause. Relatively low oil levels aboard the vessel triggered the engine failure, according to the acting director general of the Norwegian Maritime Authority. Heavy seas caused movements in the ship’s fuel tanks severe enough to disrupt the supply to the lubricating oil pumps, which set off a low-oil alarm and shortly after triggered an automatic shutdown of the engines.
A Ship Tossed by the Waves
With its engines out, the Viking Sky was left at the mercy of the storm. One passenger captured video showing the ship tilting dramatically back and forth, with furniture sliding across rooms as the vessel was tossed by heaving waves. Fearing the ship would run aground entirely, the crew worked to anchor in Hustadvika Bay, between the Norwegian cities of Ålesund and Trondheim, buying critical time for a rescue operation to begin. According to the head of the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre for southern Norway, the ship drifted to within 100 meters of running aground before crews were able to restart one of its engines.
A Dangerous Airlift Operation
With rough conditions ruling out any evacuation by boat, rescue teams turned to helicopters as the only viable option. Passengers were hoisted one by one from the ship’s deck on a wire, winched up to helicopters hovering above while the vessel continued to pitch violently in the waves. Four to five helicopters were involved in the operation at various points, battling severe winds throughout. The effort was further complicated when a second vessel — a freighter with a crew of nine — also suffered engine failure nearby, temporarily diverting helicopters away from the Viking Sky and delaying the airlift.
By the time the operation wound down, 479 passengers had been evacuated by helicopter, while about 900 people remained aboard as conditions stabilized. Twenty people suffered injuries during the ordeal, with several described as severe.
Reaching Port Safely
After one of the ship’s four engines was successfully restarted, the Viking Sky was able to continue under its own power toward the port of Molde on Norway’s west coast, arriving safely on March 24. Viking Cruises reported that 436 guests and 458 crew members remained on board for the final leg, while the 479 passengers who had been airlifted were flown home separately.
The Aftermath
The incident drew significant scrutiny in the months that followed. Passengers filed a class-action lawsuit against Viking Cruises, alleging the company had sent the ship into waters it knew were forecast to face historic winter weather without adequately warning those on board. The disaster also became a widely cited case study in maritime safety circles, highlighting how vulnerable even modern, well-equipped ships can be to a chain of mechanical failures triggered by severe weather — and underscoring the importance of robust emergency response systems when things go wrong at sea.
