At the Strait of Gibraltar, Europe and Africa are separated by just 13 kilometers of water — close enough that Spanish and Moroccan coastlines are visible to each other on a clear day. Despite decades of proposals and nearly 90 million people living within the surrounding region, no bridge has ever been built. The reasons come down to a mix of extreme geology, engineering limits, and political complexity.
The Water Is Simply Too Deep
The biggest obstacle isn’t the distance — it’s what lies beneath it. At the strait’s narrowest point, depths vary between 300 and 900 meters, a gap between surface and seabed that dramatically complicates any construction attempt. No known bridge has ever been built over such depths, and the underwater foundations required would likely be more complex than anything attempted in civil engineering to date.
The Sea Floor Sits on an Active Fault Line
Beyond depth, the location itself is geologically unstable. The Strait of Gibraltar lies directly at the boundary of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, meaning a large fixed structure like a bridge would be vulnerable to earthquake damage and ongoing tectonic stress, putting its long-term safety and stability at risk.
Violent Water Conditions Complicate Everything
The strait isn’t just deep — its ocean behavior adds another layer of difficulty. Strong currents, unpredictable tides, and shifting water conditions create hydrodynamic stress that would make the maintenance and long-term durability of any bridge extremely difficult to guarantee over decades.
A Tunnel Has Been Considered Instead — But It’s Not Simple Either
Given the challenges of a bridge, Spain and Morocco have spent decades discussing an undersea rail tunnel instead, similar in concept to the Channel Tunnel connecting France and England. The proposed Strait of Gibraltar tunnel would possibly become the longest railway tunnel in the world, surpassing both the Gotthard Base Tunnel and the Seikan Tunnel as the longest undersea tunnel. Reports indicate both countries are aiming to have a tunnel operational by 2030, timed to coincide with their joint hosting of the FIFA World Cup alongside Portugal. The proposed route would span 28 kilometers rather than following the shortest path, linking Punta Paloma in Cádiz with the Moroccan city of Malabata specifically to bypass the strait’s most extreme depth variations. Even so, constructing a tunnel at depths exceeding 500 meters remains an enormous undertaking.
Political and Economic Asymmetry Adds Another Layer
Unlike the UK-France tunnel, which connected two wealthy, closely aligned nations, a Europe-Africa link involves significant asymmetry in politics and economics between Spain and Morocco, adding a layer of complexity beyond the engineering itself. Proposals for the crossing date back to the mid-19th century, and formal government cooperation between Morocco and Spain on the idea began as early as 1979 — with a Moroccan king even expressing hope in 1988 that a bridge would be completed in his lifetime. Decades later, that hope still hasn’t been realized.
A Project With High Stakes If It Ever Happens
The potential payoff explains why the idea keeps resurfacing despite the setbacks. A functioning crossing would serve as a crucial link between the roughly 447 million people living in the European Union and the 1.4 billion people across the African continent, with major implications for trade and transportation between the two regions. For now, though, the roughly 300 ships and regular ferries that cross the strait each day remain the primary way to travel between the two continents.
