If you’re trying to disable Google’s AI features on your phone, the answer depends on which feature you’re referring to. Some AI features, such as experimental Search Labs features, can be turned off, while others, such as standard AI Overviews in Google Search, currently cannot be fully disabled in all regions.
Turn Off AI Overviews In Search Labs
If AI Overviews are enabled through Google’s Search Labs experiments:
- Open the Google app or a mobile browser.
- Make sure you’re signed in to your Google account.
- Tap the Labs icon.
- Open Manage.
- Turn off AI Overviews and more or AI in Search.
Keep in mind that this only affects Labs-based features. In many regions, standard AI Overviews are now part of Google Search and may still appear.
Use The Web Filter
For searches where AI Overviews appear, you can switch to the Web tab in search results. This displays traditional web links and generally removes AI-generated summaries from that search.
Disable Gemini As Your Assistant
If your concern is Gemini rather than AI search results:
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Open Settings.
- Select Google Assistant or Digital Assistants From Google.
- Switch from Gemini back to Google Assistant if the option is available.
Turn Off Gmail AI Features
If you want fewer AI-powered suggestions in Gmail:
- Open Gmail.
- Go to Settings.
- Open your account settings.
- Disable Smart Features and personalization options where available.
This reduces AI-generated suggestions and writing assistance.
What You Cannot Fully Disable
One important limitation is that Google currently does not provide a universal switch that completely removes all AI functionality from Google Search on mobile. In many countries, AI Overviews are integrated into standard search results and cannot be fully disabled through settings alone.
Some users choose alternatives such as:
- DuckDuckGo
- Startpage
- Brave Search
- The Web filter in Google Search
These options provide more traditional search experiences with fewer AI-generated responses.
Important Considerations
Before changing settings, it’s worth understanding that “Google AI” can refer to several different features:
- AI Overviews in Search
- Gemini Assistant
- Gmail Smart Features
- AI features in Chrome
- AI features in Android
Each has its own settings, and there is currently no single master switch that disables them all.
