On September 18–19, 1980, a routine maintenance mishap at a nuclear missile silo in rural Arkansas nearly triggered one of the most powerful weapons the United States had ever built. Known as the Damascus accident, the incident remains one of the most serious nuclear weapons close calls in American history, and it ultimately helped end an entire missile program.
How the Accident Began
The incident started with a fuel leak at 6:30 p.m. on September 18, when an airman working inside the silo dropped a tool that fell roughly 70 to 80 feet before piercing the missile’s fuel tank casing. The dropped socket punctured the skin of the Titan II’s first-stage fuel tank, causing a slow leak of highly volatile rocket propellant rather than an immediate explosion. By 9 p.m. that evening, Air Force personnel were on site working the emergency and had already begun evacuating both military staff and nearby residents.
The Night the Missile Exploded
Tensions built through the overnight hours as fuel vapors continued to accumulate inside the silo. Two airmen were sent down early the next morning to check fuel concentration readings and found them at dangerously high levels. Shortly after they climbed back to the surface and sat down near the access portal, the buildup ignited. The explosion occurred around 3:00 a.m. on September 19, destroying the launch site and killing one airman.
The Warhead’s Fate
What made the Damascus accident especially alarming wasn’t the explosion alone, but what the missile was carrying. The missile held a 9-megaton W-53 nuclear warhead, which was violently ejected from the silo by the blast and landed a short distance away, though no radioactive material was released. The force of the explosion was severe enough to blow off massive silo doors and hurl debris hundreds of feet from the launch complex.
Not the Site’s First Warning Sign
This wasn’t the first serious incident at the same location. A few key details from the site’s history show a pattern of close calls that predated the 1980 explosion:
- In January 1978, the same complex experienced an oxidizer leak that sent a large toxic vapor cloud drifting across a nearby highway, prompting a civilian evacuation
- Local residents and officials, including the county sheriff, had already begun raising concerns about safety and warning systems well before the 1980 explosion occurred
- A separate and far deadlier Titan II accident had struck a different Arkansas site near Searcy in 1965, killing 53 workers
The Aftermath and the End of an Era
The Damascus accident became one of the most widely publicized disasters connected to America’s Cold War missile program, and it played a significant role in the eventual termination of the Titan II program. The Reagan administration later phased out the aging Titan II missiles entirely, partly due to the safety concerns highlighted by incidents like this one. The former Launch Complex 374-7 site was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, and the story was further documented in the 2016 film “Command and Control,” which drew on newly declassified records to piece together the night’s events in detail.
