Iontophoresis for Hands and Feet
Iontophoresis uses a mild electrical current passed through water to temporarily reduce sweating, and it’s considered a first-line, non-invasive treatment specifically for palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis, meaning sweating of the hands and feet. It’s often appealing to patients looking for a non-drug option that can be done at home with the right device.
Device-Based and Procedural Options
For more persistent or severe cases, several device-based and surgical approaches are available:
- Microwave-based treatments, such as miraDry, use targeted heat to permanently reduce sweat glands in the underarms
- Targeted alkali thermolysis and laser-based therapies are newer, emerging options still being refined for broader use
- Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy, a surgical procedure that interrupts the nerves responsible for excessive sweating, is generally reserved for severe cases that haven’t responded to other treatments, given its more invasive nature and risk of side effects like compensatory sweating elsewhere on the body

Because hyperhidrosis varies widely in severity and the areas it affects, treatment is usually approached step by step, starting with the least invasive options and escalating only if needed.
