One of the most mysterious verses in the Bible is Jude 1:9, which describes the archangel Michael disputing with the devil over the body of Moses. The Bible never explains what happened or why, so scholars have spent centuries piecing together the likely reasons from context, other scripture, and ancient Jewish writings.
What Jude 1:9 Actually Says
The verse reads: “But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, ‘The Lord rebuke you!’” This event isn’t described anywhere else in Scripture, which is part of why it has puzzled readers for so long. The Greek wording Jude uses points to a legal dispute rather than a physical fight — the devil was essentially making a legal claim against Moses.
The Mystery of Moses’ Burial
Part of what makes this verse so intriguing is how Moses’ death is described in the Old Testament. After being shown the Promised Land from Mount Nebo, Moses died in the land of Moab, and God himself buried him — but no one knows the location of his grave to this day. That unusual, hidden burial is likely the backdrop for the dispute Jude references.
Why the Devil May Have Objected
Several explanations come up repeatedly among biblical scholars, though none can be confirmed from the text alone:
Moses’ past sins. Satan is called “the accuser of the brethren,” and he may have claimed Moses’ body based on his sin at Meribah or his earlier killing of an Egyptian. Some early interpreters believed Satan argued Moses didn’t deserve a proper burial because he was a murderer.
Preventing Moses from being honored in the afterlife. Despite any accusations, Moses died “according to the word of the Lord” and later appeared glorified alongside Elijah at the Transfiguration of Christ — suggesting the devil’s objection, whatever it was, ultimately failed.
Turning Moses’ body into an idol. One theory suggests the devil wanted Moses’ burial site to become a relic, something Israel could turn into an object of false worship — a temptation that plagued the Israelites repeatedly throughout their history. This is part of why some scholars believe God kept Moses’ grave hidden in the first place, so no shrine could ever be built there.
Where This Story Comes From
The Bible doesn’t narrate this dispute directly, which has led scholars to look outside the canonical text. Many early Christian writers believed Jude was drawing on a Jewish text known as the Assumption of Moses (also called the Testament of Moses), a non-canonical work that apparently described the event in more detail. Jude appears to be referencing that account as something his readers would already recognize, rather than introducing a brand-new story.
What the Dispute Wasn’t
It’s worth clearing up a common misreading: this wasn’t a physical battle. Scholars note there’s no reason to picture Michael and the devil in some kind of angelic sword fight over a corpse — the scene was more likely a verbal and legal confrontation, similar to when the devil quoted scripture while tempting Christ in the wilderness.

Beyond the mystery itself, Jude’s larger point in recounting this story is to model how believers should respond to evil — even Michael, facing the devil directly, didn’t rely on his own authority to condemn him and instead deferred to God’s judgment.
